Sarah + David’s Real Wedding – Honoring Traditions and Heroes

Today’s wedding has a very special story. Sarah + David were married just days before the ten year anniversary of 9/11. In planning their wedding, they wanted to be sure to honor the fallen heroes from that day, but also focus on the solidarity that followed. They also beautifully blended the features of a traditional white wedding with aspects of Sarah’s Cantonese culture, including the symbolic color red and a tea ceremony. It’s truly inspiring how seamlessly Sarah and David brought all of these elements together.

From Grace with QuoteLife PhotographySarah & David were married on September 8, 2011, three days before the ten year anniversary of 9/11. In planning their wedding, they desired their ceremony to honor the memory of those who lost their lives on that fateful day, but also to celebrate the spirit of unity and renewal that emerged in the days that followed. They also wanted a traditional white wedding that would also recognize, and celebrate, Sarah’s Cantonese roots. From their choice of venue, the picturesque Palmer Fire School in Charlotte, North Carolina, to the bursts of red throughout, symbolizing good luck and happiness in Chinese tradition, Sarah & David made this special day truly their own. They designed an event that combined celebration with retrospection, and Sarah & David’s wedding lent itself to many beautiful contrasts. With its rustically beautiful, rubble stone facade and reputation as one of the finest fire training facilities in the country, the Palmer Fire School not only provided a nuanced reminder of the sacrificial courage embodied by New York City fire fighters and other rescue personnel a decade ago, the tree-lined north side and stone walls of the school also created a distinctive, stoic backdrop for the ceremony. The neutral colors of the stone background cleverly framed the bridal party, allowing the groomsmen’s smart red ties and the bridesmaids’ brilliant red dresses to really stand out! Sarah & David’s ceremony seamlessly weaved traditions and honor with love and joy, creating a celebration both reflective and passionate.
